WELCOME TO THE CORALLINE NURSERIES
Titouan Bernicot in 2017 decided to found Coral Gardeners and make the repopulation of coral reefs the goal of his life, cultivating very resistant organisms (super-corals) in underwater nurseries to be planted later in various parts of the Earth.
He, in these remote areas of the Pacific, was born to us: for example on Google Maps, the island of Ahe is nothing more than a dot surrounded by thousands of kilometers of sea.
The coral nursery is repeatedly defined by its creator as the realization of his "childhood dream", that of a child who lives on an island, convinced that the change in the world can begin by repairing a broken coral branch.
When Bernicot noticed in 2015 that the corals were turning from red to white, he knew that something serious was happening.
"The office" of Titouan in five years has managed to put together a team of 25 people made up of biologists, activists and lovers of the sea.
Their goal is to curb the disappearance of coral reefs, currently 50%: if the trend does not reverse, by 2050 the percentage could rise to 90%.
Most of the work is done on Mo'orea Island, the so-called other Tahiti, where it all began.
For now, the corals planted by Coral are at an altitude of 25,000, of which only one third last year; Bernicot's collaborators work, or have worked, also in Canada, Turkey and France.
The growth of Bernicot's project is also passing through the involvement of important partners such as North Sails, which has dedicated a capsule collection to Coral Gardeners, whose pieces are worn during the missions, inspired by the sea and made with all recycled materials.
Entertainment personalities have also expressed their support: Jack Johnson, actor Jason Momoa and lewis Hamilton.
